“For a few years now, I believe that lightweight has been one of the toughest divisions in the UFC. It is complicated and with many challengers waiting for the opportunity. Now, there are new guys in the mix, growing and getting stronger. I believe Khabib (would be the biggest threat), but he is no longer in the fight. Maybe Islam (Makhachev), who has a similar style,” said Poirier.

This isn't the first time Dustin has praised Makhachev. Recently, in an interview with podcast gives 'American Top Team' (ATT), the former interim champion of the division had already spoken about Khabib's pupil.

“He is evolved. His feet are like hands. He’s good,” she admitted.

In 2021, Islam entered the Octagon on two occasions and won both times. The Russian now has an appointment against the former division champion, Rafael dos Anjos. The athletes face each other on October 30th. The winner could move closer to a title fight.

With two victories over Conor McGregor this season, Poirier still doesn't know the next step in his career. The fighter is the favorite to face Do Bronx in the title fight. The combatant, however, has been flirting with the possibility of having a new profitable duel, this time against Nate diaz.
