In a trilogy valid for the main card of the event, McGregor was at a disadvantage in the first round after suffering from the ground and pound by Poirier. He, however, got up in the last few seconds, but had his entire body weight on his sprained ankle after trying to throw a punch. The referee did not see the injury and Dustin still landed other blows on his opponent until the end of the round.

Conor even underwent surgery and needed to place an intramedullary rod in the tibia and screw plates in the fibula, as initially reported by the North American website 'TMZ'.

The subject is not new to Anderson Silva, who suffered a similar injury against Chris Weidman, at UFC 168, held in December 2013. At the time, which marked the rematch against the North American for the middleweight title (up to 83,9 kg), the Brazilian broke his leg after attempting a low kick and underwent surgery to insert a titanium rod into her leg to stabilize the fracture.
