Gregor Gillespie surprises Diego Ferreira and beats Brazilian by knockout at UFC Las Vegas 26

The Brazilian has a good start to the fight, but ends up succumbing to pressure from the North American in the second round

First Brazilian to enter the octagon in UFC Las Vegas 26, held this Saturday (8), Carlos Diego Ferreira started well, but ended up surprised in the confrontation against Gregor Gillespie. After a busy first round, the Amazon native succumbed to pressure from his opponent, who opted for a grappling fight. In the second round, the Tupiniquim ended up defeated by technical knockout.

Brazilian promise in the lightweight category (up to 70,3kg.), Diego Ferreira suffers the second negative result in a row, which hasn't happened since 2014. Now, the Amazonian must lose his 12th position in the rankings and is momentarily removed from climbing in the division.

Back in the Octagon after more than a year, Gillespie has plenty of reasons to celebrate. With the victory over Diego, the North American recovers from the first and only defeat in his career, which happened against Kevin Lee, UFC 244.

The fight

The confrontation began with Gillespie taking the initiative with a series of punches, which landed in the Brazilian's guard. Diego responded with a low kick, followed by a straight right. The North American found the distance better and touched the Amazonian's face with jabs. After just over a minute, Gregor looked for his opponent's legs and managed to take the duel to the ground. Ferreira managed to get up and responded to his opponent's attack with a clean right to the face. Afterwards, Carlos surprised Gregor again with a series of punches. The North American once again attempted a takedown on the Amazonian, who defended himself well. The duel went to the ground and the athletes changed the transitions, seeking the submission. Near the final minute, the athletes remained on their feet, but the North American quickly took down the Tupiniquim again. Gillespie managed to get to the back, but Diego reversed the position and looked for the choke, but there was no more time.

In the second stage, the Brazilian took the initiative with a right cross, defended by his opponent. The North American responded with a jab to the Tupiniquim's face. The confrontation continued to be busy, with the fighters exchanging blows in the center of the Octagon. Just like in the first stage, Gillespie tried to take his rival to the ground again, but Diego continued to defend himself and avoid the attacks. After a few attempts, Gregor managed to take Ferreira down, but the Amazonian showed danger in his defenses and managed to reverse the position. The North American continued to press, but Diego was looking for an opening to put his opponent in danger. Gregor tried to mount, but Carlos managed to explode and get up. Gillespie made it clear that the strategy was to play on the ground against the Brazilian. Near the final minute, Gregor managed to get to the Tupiniquim's back and attempted the rear naked choke. Diego Ferreira protected himself as best he could, while his opponent continued trying to attack from top to bottom. In the final seconds, the North American continued attacking the Tupiniquim, who, face down on the ground, was only defending his head. Gregor continued to strike until the referee stopped the dispute.

In the fight that opened the main card, a dominant performance from phil hawes. In a clash held at middleweight (up to 83,9kg), the athlete was not aware of Kyle Daukaus and was superior to his opponent by three rounds. After 15 minutes, the combatant was declared the winner with a unanimous decision by the judges.

Hawes' triumph maintained the athlete's 100% success rate with Ultimate gloves. Now, the fighter revealed by 'Contender Series' has three positive results in a row.

Angry with the defeat, Daukaus didn't want to greet his opponent after the match. After the official announcement, the American quickly left the Octagon. Now, the athlete has two defeats and one victory in the organization.

Having his first fight with UFC gloves, Carlston Harris debuted with a real show. In the clash against Christian Aguilera, the welterweight had little work to do. Showing sharp jiu-jitsu, the Guyanese athlete needed less than three minutes to land a hand triangle, obliterating his rival. The clash was marked by the referee's delay in stopping the confrontation.

With the positive result, Harris reached his fourth positive result in a row. The fighter has not lost since the setback to Jarrah Hussein Al-Silawi, in 2018.

Defeated in the event, Aguilera lost her second in a row. Now, the fighter has two negative results and one positive, achieved on his debut in the organization, in June 2020.
