St. Pierre coach rules out combined weight and wants to fight Anderson Silva at welterweight

The popular super fight between Anderson Silva, middleweight champion, against the Canadian Georges St Pierre, owner of the welterweight belt, gains strength every day within the UFC, athletes, press and coaches. However, one of those responsible for GSP's preparation poses an impeachment to the fight.

Anderson, who is champion of the 84 kg category, has already said in several interviews that the duel could take place at a combined weight, as St. Pierre fights at 77 kg. However, for Firas Zahabi, the Canadian's coach, the fight should take place in his pupil's original weight class: the welterweight division. For him, going up in weight, even to around 80kg, could be a path of no return.

“I wouldn't like Georges to change his weight, I would prefer Anderson to go down. I don't know if Anderson can reach 77kg or something close to that. But I know that if Georges goes up, he won't be able to come back. He told me this several times, and I believe it, because he would have to dedicate a lot of time to gaining the extra weight. I would like Anderson to come down as close to 77kg as possible, if that were the case,” said Zahabi, in an interview with the North American website MMA Fighting.

even though Anderson Silva Having already competed at welterweight at the beginning of his career, in 2002, where he has since moved up to the middleweight category and on three occasions Spider has fought at light heavyweight within the UFC. For this reason, the Brazilian himself suggested an intermediate weight between welterweight and middleweight – something around 80 kg. But that doesn't please St-Pierre's coach.

“The issue is that, on the day of the fight, Georges will show up at 91kg, and I don't think that's fair. I don't think it's a fair fight. If Anderson can get down to 77kg, that would be great. Georges has to fight anyone within this weight limit. Then, yes, it would be a fair fight. Even if Anderson gained a lot of weight after the weigh-in, he would still be worn down by the weight loss, and that would make the fight equal for both of them,” added Zahabi.
