Former number three in the welterweight rankings (up to 77kg.), Leon edwards did not accept Ultimate's decision well in remove him from the group under the allegation of inactivity. “I'm still in the rankings. Fuck inactivity. The only reason I haven't fought is because all these guys who call themselves 'top' rejected me. Khamzat, do you want to fight then?” wrote Edwards, on his account on 'Twitter'.
The moment is indeed complicated for Edwards. The Englishman ended up losing prestige with the organization after withdrawing from the clash against the former category champion, Tyron woodley. At the time, the two would face each other in March, in England. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the company chose to change the location of the card to the United States. Leon, then, for security reasons, preferred to leave the show, later giving way to Gilbert Durinho.
Undefeated in eight commitments, Edwards has not performed since July last year, when he overcame the Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos. Since then, the Englishman has been challenging opponents from the group's elite, but without success.
Before challenging Chimaev, Leon bet his chips on a clash against the current number two in the category, Gilbert Durinho. The Brazilian was negotiating the duel against the group champion, Kamaru Usman, but the plan fell through after the Nigerian asked for more time to prepare.
Upon learning of the Englishman's challenge, the Niteroi native promptly refused the proposal. According to Durinho, he has already achieved the status of challenger and does not need to test himself against any rival other than the champion.
I'm still in the rankings. Fuck all the inactivity, the only reason I haven't fought is because all these so called top guys turned me down.
Khamzat wants to fight then?
