Sonnen explained, with a certificate from doctor Timothy Trainor, that he suffers from a disease called hypogonadism, a condition in which the body does not produce enough testosterone, and since then he has been taking, in a controlled manner, two self-administered injections per week to maintain normal levels of the substance. .

“I have no option. Either I take this medicine or I die. I'm not asking if I can take it. It's up to them (Nevada Athletic Commission) to let me take it. It’s a substance that many abuse, and I deal with some feelings of shame for taking it,” said Sonnen, in an interview with the American newspaper Los Angeles Times.

“But a blood test can show that I am clean and have taken the appropriate amount. I'm paying for the tests. I've done four so far. And they (from the commission) will do a test the day before the fight and the next morning too”, added the fighter.
