Previously, White had named Tony as the next challenger for the linear title, currently held by Khabib Nurmagomedov. Therefore, Dana stated that Ferguson's absence did not happen at the will of the UFC.
Ferguson has remained undefeated since May 2012. Since then, he has had 12 UFC victories, including six submissions, three by points and two knockouts. Tony won the interim lightweight title by winning Kevin Lee in October 2017, but was removed due to a series of injuries.
