Known for its rigor in doping trials, the California Athletic Commission approved controversial regulations for fights held in the state. The entity ratified an amendment that allows exceptions for the therapeutic use of banned substances for athletes, including testosterone replacement therapy and the use of medical marijuana.
According to the American magazine “Sports Illustrad”, the amendment follows the exception process that the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) uses for Olympic athletes, and will only apply “medications necessary to maintain health and not obtain an unfair advantage over their opponent in a fight".
However, before it comes into force, the amendment still has to be reviewed and voted on by the Administrative Law Branch to become official. And this vote could take up to years to happen.
