Suspended until May 2020 by USADA, the gaucho once again asked to be released from his contract with Ultimate so he could return to doing what he loves most: fighting.

Fabricio Werdum is away from the UFC until May 2020 due to having been caught in an anti-doping test carried out by the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA in its acronym in English), but the gaucho does not want to wait all this time on the hook and has once again asked Ultimate to release him from his contract so he can compete outside the US.

“I'm afraid the UFC will only terminate my contract when I'm close to the end of the suspension, but that's not what I want. I want to terminate my contract now so I can still have time to fight, because it's what I like to do most. I want to stop fighting when I want to stop fighting, not when someone wants me to stop, like the system did. I want to stop whenever I think I have to stop”, said Werdum, in an interview with the Tatame magazine website.

Unable to work in the UFC, Fabrício decided that he will continue his career in other MMA franchises. The former heavyweight champion stated that he received offers from other events, but before accepting, he wants to resolve his situation with Ultimate.

“I project my future away from the UFC. It's not what I wanted, but the situation is saying that, so I can do mine. I've already fought in the best events in the world and I want to keep fighting for three years or, suddenly, even four. I don't know, because my body is still good. I don't have a serious injury and I didn't take that much of a blow to the head. I'm fine physically and mentally, so I can return to fight in Japan and go to other places, like Russia, which is a very good market. So that's what I want, to keep fighting until I think I have to stop”, said the Brazilian.

Werdum maintains the same training routine even though he is away from the UFC. The former champion admits that this keeps him motivated and in shape for when he can fight again.

“I keep training, keeping up the training so I don't stop, because we stop training and feel really demotivated. At the beginning of the suspension it was very difficult, but it has now returned to normal. I continue with my business, with the things I have outside of the fight, investments, properties for rent and those things that we do outside of the fight. I'm with my family a lot too. Everything practically remains the same, but I just can't fight. Everything is back to normal again”, concluded Fabrício.
