Khabib Nurmagomedov finished Conor McGregor at 3:03 of the fourth round of the main fight of UFC 229. Since then, possible clashes for the lightweight belt against 'Eagle' have been speculated, including a rematch with 'Notorious'. However, on his podcast 'The Joe Rogan Experience', the Ultimate commentator stated that there is only one man who deserves the chance to face the Russian and that is Tony Ferguson.

'El Cucuy' defeated Anthony Pettis by technical knockout at 5 minutes into the second round in the co-main event of UFC 229. For Joe, Ferguson's performance was brilliant and more than enough to place him as the next challenger for the lightweight title.

“After that performance against Pettis… Come on man! This is the time. This is the time to put him as a challenger. He's so tough. It’s the fight!” said Rogan.

With the victory over Pettis, Ferguson made it 12 straight victories in his career. Tony hasn't lost since May 2012, when he was defeated by Michael Johnson in unanimous decision.

“Didn’t Tony (Ferguson) lose in what is this, twelve fights? It's eleven or twelve wins in a row against guys like Edson Barboza and d'Arces. Kevin Lee, (Antônio) Pettis, Josh thomson, Rafael dos Anjos, Lando vannata … Face, Tony Ferguson It's a ferocious monster. He doesn't get as much attention as he deserves,” Joe explained.

Ferguson won the interim lightweight belt with a submission Kevin Lee in October 2017 at UFC 216. Tony was scheduled to face Khabib at UFC 223 for the belt unification, but due to a knee injury he was removed from the fight. Furthermore, the fighter was stripped of the division title by Ultimate.
