UFC 229: Tony Ferguson knocks out Anthony Pettis and challenges McGregor

Tony Ferguson showed Ultimate why he should be the next lightweight title challenger. In a frank combat, 'El Cucuy' defeated Anthony Pettis by technical knockout 5m into the second round. At the end of the intermediate round, 'Showtime' broke his hand and was unable to return to the Octagon. Thus, the former interim champion was declared the winner of the fight. The duel was valid for the co-main event of UFC 229, this Saturday (06) in Las Vegas.

At the end of the confrontation, Ferguson was in tears in the octagon. However, Tony recovered and, still inside the cage, challenged Conor McGregor.

'El Cucuy' has 27 fights in his career with 24 wins, 11 of which were knockouts, eight submissions and five decisions. While Pettis maintains an irregular record in Ultimate, three of his five fights ended in a defeat for the American.

The fight

The fight between the lightweights started hot. Pettis kicked low and hit his rival's thigh. With a technical fight, none of the fighters left any gaps. However, Ferguson cornered Anthony on the fence and threw a straight right, but stopped in his guard. 'Showtime' tried to escape but was hunted down by Tony. 'El Cucuy's' strikes were more effective and the first round was dominated by the former interim champion.

The second round began with Ferguson's attack on his rival. Anthony fell and Tony went up and pressed. The fight was interrupted, as 'Showtime' opened a cut on his forehead and was evaluated by the UFC medical commission. With everything in order, the duel returned. However, in the final seconds of the confrontation, 'Devastator' found a blow that knocked out 'OSP', even though the referee did not consider it. With this, the Californian maintained his unbeaten record in 10 career clashes. The Haitian recorded his tenth defeat in a record of 32 clashes.

The fight started with both athletes looking for confrontation. However, Reyes managed to dominate the round by landing more forceful blows. Thus, Saint Preux got dizzy, even so Dominick didn't knock out his rival.

The second round began with Reyes once again putting pressure on Ovince. Dominick managed to land kicks and punches that put Saint Preux on the fence. The fighters studied each other more looking for the knockout. Until the final seconds of the round there wasn't much action, as the fighters saved their energy for the last half.

However, in the second final 'Devastator' found a hit and knocked out 'OSP'. Even so, the Haitian was saved by the bell.

In a comeback, Lewis knocks out Volkov in the last seconds of the third round

After being booed in his victory against Francis Ngannou, Derrick Lewis redeemed himself with the organization. At UFC 229, the North American won Alexander Volkov by knockout at 4:49 of the third round. 'Black Beast' wins the third consecutive victory in his career and should move from third place in the heavyweight rankings. With the setback, 'Drago' adds seven defeats to his MMA record.

The first round began with the giants trying to find the right time to unleash their blows. Lewis was the first to take a risk, he tried a different shot, but didn't find the Russian. Alexander dominated the match with many hard-hitting attacks and Derrick tried to stay on his feet. With just a few seconds left, Lewis threw a right kick that skimmed his rival. So the second round ended.

The Russian started the last round dominating the confrontation. He punished Derrick with numerous blows to the head. Even though he seemed to have no energy, Lewis attacked his rival and connected heavy blows. In one last effort, the American threw a right cross that caught Volkov squarely. Thus, 'Black Beast' defeated his opponent with a brutal knockout.
