After being left without an opponent at UFC 228, Valentina Shevchenko will finally have the chance to fight for the vacant flyweight (57 kg) title. The Kyrgyz woman will face Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 231, December 08th, in Toronto (CAN). The news was given by the organization's president Dana White in an interview with the North American channel The Sports Network.
Valentina was scheduled to face Nicco Montaño for the flyweight belt, at UFC 228, on September 08th. The division champion had problems with the weight cut, was hospitalized and had the fight cancelled. Therefore, the organization chose to withdraw her title.
With the belt vacant, Ultimate saw the opportunity to revive an already existing rivalry in Muay Thai. Joanna and Valentina faced each other three times in the sport and the Kyrgyzstani won each time on points.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk will move up a division to try to win the title. Thus, the Polish fighter could be the first woman to win belts in two categories at the event. In his last commitment, the strawweight won Tecia torres at UFC Calgary in July this year. Before that, she had two defeats to the division champion, Rose namajunas.
Valentina Shevchenko has a record of 18 clashes with 15 triumphs and three setbacks. On seven occasions, the Kyrgyzstani won by submission. His last fight was at UFC Belém in February. The fighter defeated Priscila Cachoeira with a rear naked choke in the second round. After the victory, 'Bullet' waited for Montaño to return so he could challenge for the belt.
