While the Puerto Rican put all his weapons on the line, the American looked unrecognizable inside the Octagon. At UFC 228, 'El terror' wins his 22nd career victory. The 'Magician' goes to the tenth defeat in his record.

The fight between the bantamweights started slowly with both fighters studying each other. Rivera threw two low kicks in a row. In response, Dodson tried left hooks that didn't connect. Afterwards, Jimmie kicks John, who catches the opponent's foot and tries to knock him down ineffectively. The Puerto Rican lands a low kick and draws the North American close, manages to catch him from behind and puts him on the ground. The 'magician' launches a left cross, but receives a right cross in response. 'El terror' feels his opponent's straight left. So the first round was 'for the count'.

The second round begins with Rivera attacking his opponent with a kick that hits his right leg, which is his base. The Puerto Rican focuses on punches to Dodson's leg as he tries to apply jabs and straight shots. Thus, the two fighters begin a frank exchange. John throws a high kick, but the opponent defends and strikes with a jab and straight. The North American tries a rolling punch, but his opponent avoids the blow. 'El terror' kicks his rival's leg hard and catches him in the genital area and the fight is stopped. The fight quickly resumes, but the athletes throw ineffective punches and kicks. Thus, the second round ends.

The last round begins with Rivera kicking the opponent's base. The two fighters measure the distance and Jimmie manages to land a left cross on Dodson who loses his balance. Afterwards, the Puerto Rican delivers another low kick that keeps his opponent unstable. The two fighters strike into the void. 'El terror' continues to pressure the North American with attacks that are not blunt, but John, in an unrecognizable performance, cannot be superior. The third round comes to an end.
