Two-time world champion in jiu-jitusu, Mackenzie dern he had the debut he expected at UFC 222 in March. She beat the North American Ashley yoder and remained undefeated in MMA. However, back at training, she received the news that she was expelled from the MMA Lab team.
In an interview with the Ag. Fight website, Mackenzie stated that he didn't like Arizona, the place where he lived to train, but he decided that he would stay on the MMA Lab team until he won the UFC belt. Dern started at MMA Legacy FC in 2016 with the academy and is grateful for their work on this journey. “I started splitting my time between California and Arizona and, after my last fight, my head coach there, John Crouch, thought it was better for me to leave the team. And that gave me that push to come,” she declared.

“Actually, I was happy, because I always liked the training here [in California], I thought they were more like me. But nothing happens by chance. I thought it was great. And I'm training a lot, because I have a fight coming up [laughs]. There was no fight or anything. It was a surprise, because I went back to Arizona and, the next thing I knew, he came to me and said he thought it was better for us not to work together anymore. I respect his decision. Everyone knows what is best. I have to think about myself, about doing the best for myself”, assured Dern. With the departure of MMA Lab, the Brazilian-American has divided her training between two teams: Checkmate and Blackhouse.
