Concerned about possible problems at UFC 225, an event that takes place on June 9th in Chicago (USA), Ultimate decided to be cautious with its athletes. The organization sent a memo to all fighters on the card informing them that the Illinois Athletic Commission, the entity that will sanction the event, has a strict policy against the use of recreational drugs and recommended that everyone involved in the show suspend the use of recreational substances, such as marihuana.

Although marijuana is a recreational drug that is not punished by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) during non-competition periods – other than the week of the event – the Illinois Athletic Commission does not leave this open to athletes and they can be harshly punished if they are caught in the test. Furthermore, other commissions have a 150ng/mL tolerance for marijuana metabolism during fight week, whereas in Illinois the rate must be zero.

“Due to the Illinois Commission's tolerance policy on marijuana, we recommend that the use of the drug be discontinued for anyone participating in UFC 225 between the current date and the event,” says the memo, published by the North American website MMAWeekly.

The only exception to the rule will be for fighters who have received a prescription to use marijuana medicinally. These athletes would have to submit written documents to the Illinois Commission proving the medical necessity of marijuana. Marijuana is legal for recreational use in nine US states and for medicinal use in 29 of the country's 50 states. On the other hand, the drug remains illegal at the federal level.
