Ultimate Vice President Jeff Novitzky doesn't believe that Jon Jones had the intention of ingesting a prohibited substance after being caught in an anti-doping test following the victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 in July last year. According to the director, this could mean a reduction in the fighter's sentence, which could be up to four years for his repeat offense, as the same thing happened the first time the North American was caught.

In an interview with UFC commentator Joe Rogan, Novitzky explained that it doesn't make sense that Jon Jones has used steroids on purpose, but is waiting for more information before forming a definitive opinion.

“It wouldn’t make much sense for a UFC athlete, especially a title contender, who knew he was being tested regularly. It doesn't make sense if you're trying to cheat. This came out after USADA (US Anti-Doping Agency) did another test on Jon a month or two after his test came back positive. And it was negative. This would be an indication that the prohibited substance entered his body at some point between the 7th and 8th of July and was in a small quantity, eliminated from the body quickly. Again, who knows what direction this will take? Overall, with the information that is there, it would not indicate intentional use. This could be wrong. I don't know definitively. Let’s see how this will unfold”, commented Novitzky, who does not believe in the maximum penalty for the former champion.

“I don’t think we necessarily have to apply a four-year punishment for a second failure, when the first time, it was proven that the person had no intention of cheating,” he added.
