The light heavyweight Volkan oezdemir is close to the biggest fight of his career, at UFC 220 on January 20th, when he faces Daniel Cormier for the category belt. Before that, however, the Swiss will have to go through a battle outside the Octagon. He will be tried for assault after being involved in a fight in a bar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in August this year. He was summoned to appear in a North American court on January 9, 11 days before the duel with the champion DC.

After being identified by police as Kevin Cohen's attacker during a fight in August, Oezdemir was arrested, but was quickly released after paying $10 bail. He allegedly knocked out the attacker with one punch and, according to the accusations, left Cohen unconscious for more than 10 minutes as a result of his punch. His lawyer maintains that the fighter was not the main aggressor and that his actions were justified. He maintains his innocence and, in this first trial, he will have the opportunity to demonstrate his defense of the case. If he is found guilty, the Swiss could face up to five years in prison.

The Swiss has 16 fights in his professional MMA career, with 15 wins and just one loss. For the UFC, “No Time” is undefeated, achieving three victories. After winning Ovince St Preux by split decision, Oezdemir knocked out Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa in less than a minute, earning the right to challenge Cormier. The UFC made the dispute official after the Swiss man's arrest, trusting that he will have no problems showing up and fighting for the title at UFC 220.
