Yoshihiro Akiyama's phase is not the best. The Japanese arrived in the UFC with superstar status in 2009, when he defeated Alan belcher in the judges' split decision. But since his debut, the Japanese athlete has not known what it means to win and has accumulated three consecutive defeats.
The series of poor results made Akiyama change the direction of his career. The fighter, who recently closed his gym in Japan, will move to America and do part of his training with the Canadian Georges St Pierre. Furthermore, Yoshihiro announced his change of category: from the middleweight division, to welterweight, the same as GSP.
Although not yet official, Akiyama's welterweight debut should take place early next year, when the UFC is expected to hold an event in Japanese territory.
