If it depends on Dana White, president of Ultimate, the return of Conor McGregor to the octagon will be against Tony Ferguson, who became interim lightweight champion by finishing Kevin Lee in the main fight of UFC 216, last Saturday (07), the director tried to deny rumors of a possible trilogy between Conor and Nate diaz, stating that the duel for the unification of the belts is the only plausible one for the current moment in the under-70kg category.

“There’s the champion and the interim champion, this is the only fight to be married now. It's not true (that Diaz can face Conor again). We never had a conversation about it. McGregor wants to fight again this year. (After the fight against Floyd Mayweather) we went to Ibiza for a while to celebrate and came home. You have to let him enjoy it a little and then we will try to decide about the future”, declared White, in an interview shortly after the event.
Despite indicating that McGregor x Ferguson will take place in the near future, Dana assured that there is still no set date for the fight to take place, although he prefers it to be in 2017. The president also took the opportunity to come out in defense of the 'Notorious' , saying that the Irishman doesn't choose his opponents in the UFC.
"When? In December? Let's see what will happen. I would love to see him fight this year. (…) I’ve said it a million times: Conor McGregor never denied a fight. He even told me he was going to Russia to face Khabib. Conor doesn't turn down fights. So it's not a question of 'Oh Conor doesn't want to face Ferguson'. Obviously Conor had the opportunity to make a lot of money and I felt like I should at least try to make this fight happen and that's what we did. However, I would like to get back to business and see some title defenses,” he concluded.
