The welterweight Alex Cowboy will try to climb even further in the division's rankings on December 2nd, when he will face Hawaiian Yancy Medeiros at UFC 218. The fighter from Rio de Janeiro is the first Brazilian athlete confirmed for the event, which will take place in the city of Detroit, in the United States. Currently in 14th place in the rankings up to 77 kg. of Ultimate, Cowboy debuted among the 15 best welterweights in the world after his triumph over Ryan LaFlare, by knockout, in the UFC Long Island, in July this year. He has been in excellent form since moving permanently to the top division, after starting his career in the organization as a lightweight. There are four victories in the last five fights, over James Moontasri, Will Brooks, Tim means and LaFlare – the other duel of the last five was a no-contest fight against Means, who landed an illegal blow on Cowboy.
Yancy Medeiros, in turn, will only have his third fight at welterweight. The Hawaiian comes from two consecutive victories, over Sean Spencer at UFC 203, in September last year, and then a knockout over the Brazilian Erick silva, away from home, at UFC 212, in June this year, in Rio de Janeiro. The division change was prompted by the dominant defeat to Francisco Massaranduba, at UFC 198, in May last year, in Curitiba.
In addition to Cowboy x Medeiros, UFC 218 has some other duels confirmed so far, with emphasis on the heavyweight fight between Francis Ngannou e alistair overeem – the winner must be the champion’s next challenger Stipe Miocic. Henry Cejudo x Sergio Pettis, in the flyweight division, also promises to bring a new challenger to the category champion – Demetrious Johnson puts his belt on the line, this Saturday (7) against Ray Borg at UFC 216.
