Two of the best light heavyweights of all time, Jon Jones e Daniel Cormier They have already been scheduled to face each other four other times. Of these, only one fight took place, with “Bones” winning by unanimous decision. This Saturday, one of the most anticipated rematches of all time finally takes place.

After the first duel between the two, then-champion Jones had problems outside the Octagon and lost his belt. The title was put back in contention at UFC 187, in May 2015, when DC recovered from the setback to its rival, concluded Anthony Johnson and became the new king of the 93 kg category. He has since defended his title against Alexander Gustafson and in a rematch with Johnson, in addition to winning Anderson Silva in combat where his belt was not at stake.

Jones, on the other hand, had to deal with legal problems and was suspended for a year from the UFC. Before facing DC again, at UFC 200, a new hook: another 12 months for falling victim to doping. During this time, while the opponent fought three times, “Bones” only took action against Ovince St Preux, performing below average.

This Saturday, however, the rivalry between the two could come to an end, if Jones wins, or open the way to a new and final chapter, if Cormier emerges victorious.

2 – Demian Maia’s last chance

The walk was long and full of quarries, but Demian Maia, at 39 years old, will finally have the opportunity to compete for the welterweight title. After lining up seven opponents, including the likes of Neil Magny, Gunnar Nelson, Matt Brown, Carlos Condit e Jorge masvidal, the São Paulo native faces the champion Tyron woodley with the aim of taking jiu-jitsu to the top.

A Brazilian with the highest number of victories in UFC history – 19 in total -, Demian is one of those rare cases: he doesn't offer the benefit of the doubt and everyone knows what he's going to try to do, but very few can avoid it. Considered by many to have the best adapted jiu-jitsu in the history of MMA, the ace of the gentle art is averse to provocations, preferring to show his value inside the octagon, preferably with submissions.

When facing Woodley, Maia will certainly face the biggest logistical challenge in the 77kg division. A decorated wrestler with a very high percentage of takedown defenses, the North American will rely on good defensive grappling and heavy hands to try to stop the Brazilian's good form.

Demian Maia Will you be able to overcome Woodley's defense system or will you be left in the way? We will know the result soon, but, in any case, one thing is undeniable: his legacy is already marked in the history of the sport.

3 – Cris Cyborg’s time has come

The title of the boom itself says it all. Long considered the best MMA fighter of all time, Chris Cyborg will finally fight for the UFC belt. Undefeated in 18 fights – her only setback was in her professional debut in 2005 – she will have the chance to crown her career full of achievements, including the titles of Invicta FC and the now-defunct Strikeforce.

Cyborg's importance for women in MMA is so great that it is no secret to anyone that the women's featherweight division was created by Ultimate in favor of the Brazilian, since she is unable to beat the bantamweight limit, due to of its large size for the category. So much so that her only two performances at home, the knockouts over Leslie Smith and Lina Lansberg, were at weight (63,5kg).

The person in charge of trying to stop the Curitiba native's dream is newcomer Tonya Evinger, former Invicta champion. At 36 years old, four years older than her rival, Evinger enters as a clear underdog, with basically no major responsibilities surrounding her name. She could too, after all, of Cyborg's 17 victims, 15 were left behind by the heavy fists of the Chute Boxe athlete, such was her technical superiority over the competition.

4 – Former champions looking for recovery

In addition to the three title fights mentioned above, the event will also feature the presence of two former UFC champions: Renan Barao e Robbie Lawler. Although the two find themselves in different situations, we can say that they are both looking to recover their careers.

Former bantamweight champion, Barão is going through the worst phase of his career. Since he was brutally dethroned by TJ Dillashaw, in May 2014, the potiguar was unable to repeat his good performances. In the four fights he has had since then, he has a 50% success rate: he submitted Mitch Gagnon, was knocked out again by Dillashaw, lost to Jeremy Stephens and hit the limited Philippe Nover, the last two being at featherweight.

Barão's intention was to return to bantamweight, but he was banned by the Commission responsible for UFC 214, due to the problems he already faced with the scales. In this way, the duel against aljamain sterling will be contested at catch weight (up to 63,5kg). If you want to stay relevant and retrace your journey to the top, a convincing victory is more than necessary for someone who was once considered the best in the world.

Lawler's case is different. Without showing his face since July 2016, when he lost the welterweight belt after being knocked out by Tyron woodley, Ruthless is still on the rise in the division. Known for the wars fought inside the octagon, such as the title fights against John hendricks, Rory McDonald e Carlos Condit, he wants to ensure that the golden belt can still be his.

To do this, you will have to overcome the always thick-skinned Donald Cerrone, which had four consecutive victories until being stopped by Jorge masvidal. In the battle between two creative and skilled strikers, the victor will certainly place themselves in an even more favorable position at 77kg.

5 – Brazilian promise in action

The first Tupiniquim representative on the show will be the featherweight Renato Moicano. Undefeated with 11 wins and one draw in his career, the Brasilia native has been in Ultimate for almost three years, but has only had three fights in that period.

His debut, in December 2014, was against Finnish Tom Niinimaki, whom he had no difficulty submitting. After suffering from injuries and being inactive throughout 2015, Moicano returned to the Octagon at the historic UFC 198, in Curitiba, in May 2016. The performance was discreet, but enough to overcome the Russian Zubaira Tukhugov. However, the biggest triumph of his career came in his last challenge.

Escalated against the dangerous Jeremy Stephens, at the time 5th in the featherweight rankings, Renato, a clear underdog for the fight, surprised by putting on a convincing and confident performance on his feet, winning the split decision against the North American. The result placed the Brazilian in the top 10 featherweight division.

Now, against the also undefeated Brian ortega, number 8 in the division, Moicano will have to prove, once again, that his promising status is already a thing of the past. At 28 years old, Moicano is already a reality in the hotly contested under-66kg category.
