This is the second time that the confrontation between Werdum and Rothwell has been scheduled. The first was in September last year, at UFC 203, but the American suffered a knee injury and was removed from the card.

At 39 years old, Werdum is coming off a recent victory over Travis Browne at UFC 203, a card in which he should have faced Rothwell. This was the Brazilian's only fight after losing the belt to Miocic in May 2016, when he was knocked out by the current champion at UFC 198, in Curitiba (PR). Previously, he had won the interim heavyweight title by knocking out Mark Hunt at UFC 180, in 2014, and unified the belts by submitting the previously linear champion Cain Velazquez at UFC 188, in June 2015.

Rothwell, in turn, is coming off a loss to Cigano at UFC Zagreb, in April last year. The setback broke a streak of four wins for the North American, who had defeated Brandon Vera, alistair overeem, Matt Mitrione and Josh Barnett, all for the fast track. At 35 years old, Big Ben, as he is known, has six positive results and four negative results in the organization.
