César Gracie: “It’s impossible to keep Shields down”

Jake Shields will have, next Saturday (30), the chance to defeat the Canadian Georges St Pierre, owner of the UFC welterweight belt and considered one of the best athletes in the world. Although GSP, as the champion is known, is known worldwide for his ability to take down his opponent and control the fight on the ground, Brazilian César Gracie, Shields' coach, is betting on the success of his pupil's jiu-jitsu technique.

“Some really good guys tried to take down and keep Jake (Shields) down and they couldn’t. This will not happen. You can't keep it on the ground, it's simply impossible to stay on top of it”, said Cesar Gracie, in an interview with the North American website Sherdog. For the commander, the audience of 55 thousand people at the Rogers Centre, who will be cheering for GSP, could interfere with Shields' game plan, but he is betting on his student's concentration.

“Jake is fighting in foreign territory. He has to stay focused. I've seen a lot of great fighters fight below their potential because they were in big, packed arenas. If the Jake I know enters the octagon and does his best, he will definitely win this fight, but I also understand that there are a number of factors. I know GSP is a great fighter and I'm very interested to see how things will play out. I believe Jake has every chance of winning this fight,” he concluded.
