The UFC's anti-doping program has claimed some high-profile victims in recent months, including Jon Jones, Brock Lesnar e Chad Mendes. And fighters be careful: Ultimate's official partner revealed that testing will be intensified even further in the next quarter.
Jeff Novitzky, UFC vice president of performance and athlete health, said there will be a significant increase in surprise doping tests carried out by USADA, the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Around 700 tests will be carried out over the next three months, more than in the previous quarter – when between 450 and 550 tests were carried out.
According to Novitzky, the UFC's anti-doping policy will only now begin to take full effect. “We are very happy with the program, considering we started it from scratch. I am amazed at the progress we have made. This will be the first quarter in which the program will be implemented at full strength,” he said, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Fighting”.
All athletes under UFC contract, which are approximately 630 fighters, are subject to surprise exams, whether a fight is scheduled or not.
