New interim UFC featherweight champion, José Aldo caused a furor with the public with his statement that he had a “spy” in his training sessions. Frankie Edgar for UFC 200. The Brazilian then went public to clarify that the comment was nothing more than a joke, with the aim of poking fun at his likely future opponent, Conor McGregor.

In a recent press conference, Aldo mentioned that he knew exactly what Edgar's strategy would be for the duel because he had an ally infiltrated in the North American's preparation. He then took to Instagram to say that it was ironic, as McGregor had also declared that he had an informant in Aldo's training before the fight between the two.

“Sometimes we joke in our interviews, and some comments take on enormous proportions. Just to be clear, I have always been a fair fighter. I got to where I am through my efforts and that of my team alone. I would never do anything that went against my principles. My team is known for producing tough athletes with character, and we will continue to do so. What I said about spying was just mentioning a comment made by McGregor in our fight, just to start speculating him for the next fight. I released this so he would be smarter”, wrote the Brazilian fighter.

“Everyone knows that you can't change a game of your entire life the week of the fight. It was clear to us that Frankie was going to use everything that worked in his past fight with me. So, guys, don't worry about the spy, he will only be in the minds of my opponents. This is the greatest spy I can have, because the confidence for those who didn't believe I would have, I showed that I have enough to fight anyone”, he added.

With the interim featherweight title, Aldo practically guarantees the right to a rematch against McGregor, the lineal champion of the weight class. According to the Brazilian, the new duel should take place at UFC 205, in New York (USA).
