The MMA community greatly mourned the sudden death of Kimbo Slice, a Bellator athlete, in the early hours of Monday night (6) in the United States. The 42-year-old fighter, whose real name was Kevin Ferguson, succumbed to heart problems and passed away, leaving behind six children and a longtime girlfriend.

The first to pay tribute to the fighter was the gym where Kimbo trained, American Top Team. The team, based in Florida (USA), left its message to the athlete even before his death was officially confirmed to the public. “The ATT family and the South Florida community have lost a legend. Rest in peace, Kimbo,” the team wrote on its official Twitter.

Scott Coker, president of Bellator and Kimbo's boss, also left his message of condolence. “We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family. One of the most popular fighters of all, Kimbo was charismatic and a personality that transcended the sport. Out of cage he was friendly, kind and a family man. His loss leaves us with a heavy heart. Our prayers go out to the Ferguson family and all of Kimbo’s friends, fans and teammates,” he said.

The UFC also paid tribute, the organization in which Kimbo fought twice at the end of the last decade. “The UFC is saddened to hear the news of Kevin Ferguson's passing. Slice will forever be part of UFC history. He conducted himself like a true professional during his time with our organization. He will never be forgotten for his fighting style, his warm personality and his commitment to family and friends. The UFC offers its sincere condolences to Slice’s family, friends and American Top Team teammates.”

Some of Kimbo's opponents expressed sadness over what happened. First it was Roy Nelson, who won a heavyweight duel during TUF 10. “This week has been crazy in combat sports. Kimbo Slice, you will be missed, my brother. He entertained, made our sport better and helped attract more fans. Thank you,” said the UFC heavyweight.

Seth Petruzelli, Kimbo's first tormentor in professional MMA, sent a message to his fans. “Wow, I was in shock now. Rest in peace, Kimbo. And just to let you know: please don't refer to me as 'Kimbo's killer' anymore. Now that nickname gets weird,” he declared.
