Frankie Edgar e Gray Maynard they did in the main fight of UFC-125, a disputed and exciting duel, where after the five rounds of the fight valid for the lightweight belt, the judges ruled a draw. As a result, the long-awaited unification of the UFC and WEC titles will have to wait a little longer, as UFC president Dana White wants a rematch to take place soon. With this decision, not yet official, Anthony Pettis, owner of the WEC category title, will remain in line for a while longer and the expected unification should only take place in the second half of 2011.
“We changed plans. After the announcement, several people came to talk to me and the reality is that Gray Maynard deserved to win. We wanted to put Pettis as the next challenger, but Gray fought really hard and deserves another chance”, said Dana at the press conference immediately after UFC-125.
If the rematch is confirmed, this will be the third fight between Frankie Edgar e Gray Maynard. In the first confrontation between them, held at UFN-13, in 2008, Maynard defeated Edgar in a unanimous decision by the judges and suffered the only defeat in the champion's career.
