After consolidating himself as one of the biggest heavyweights in MMA today, alistair overeem, won an important belt in another sport in the early hours of Saturday. The Dutchman is the new champion of the K-1 World GP, the biggest striking tournament in the world. Overeem defeated on the same night Tyrone Spong, Gokhan Saki and the compatriot Peter Aerts to keep the belt. The result of the final frustrated Aerts' dream of becoming four-time GP champion and equaling the feat of Ernesto Hoost e Semmy schilt. Alistair is the first fighter to win an important MMA (Strikeforce) and K-1 belt.
The only Brazilian at the event, Ewerton Teixeira made the reserve fight of the tournament and defeated Errol Zimmerman in the unanimous decision of the judges, but as there were no injuries or withdrawals, the Brazilian athlete was not called up for the GP. Check out the full results of the event:
