Caught in a drug test before his most recent fight, against Ronaldo Jacare, Yoel romero decided to appeal the suspension imposed by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) in an attempt to receive immediate clearance to return to the Octagon.
According to information from the North American website “MMA Fighting”, the Cuban even negotiated a milder nine-month suspension with USADA, but preferred, together with his team, to appeal the punishment.
Romero claims that the doping in question was due to contamination of one of his supplements. The substance detected was not disclosed by either the fighter or USADA.
In December 2015, Romero defeated Jacaré in a close fight at UFC 194, in Las Vegas (USA). At the time, the Cuban had practically guaranteed his position as the next challenger for the middleweight belt. However, doping changed plans and gave Chris Weidman a chance against the champion Luke Rockhold.
