Hughes and Penn will face each other for the third time in the UFC
One of the biggest rivalries in UFC history could soon have a new chapter. Valid in the welterweight category, the third fight between the Hawaiian B.J. Penn and the american Matt hugs is being planned by the Ultimate organization for UFC 123, an event that will take place on November 20th in Detroit, United States. The main fight of this edition will be between the Brazilian Lyoto Machida and the North American Quinton jackson, both former UFC light heavyweight champions.
The first fight between Hughes and Penn took place in 2004, at UFC 46, where the Hawaiian won by submission (rear-naked choke) in the first round. The second clash, held at UFC 63 in 2006, was for the welterweight belt and Hughes defended his title by winning via technical knockout in the third round. It is worth noting that in this last fight between the two athletes Penn was at the time the UFC lightweight champion.
In a video posted on his official website, BJ reported that he had spoken with UFC president Dana White about the possibility of holding a “big fight” in November. In the same vein, Hughes also confirmed that he has been in contact with White regarding UFC 123.
“Dana (White) called me and we had an interesting conversation about the November 20th event. More information at any time,” she said.
Besides Lyoto Machida, UFC 123 will feature the debut of two Brazilians at the event. The undefeated Edson Junior will face Darren Elkins by the division of light weights and Maiquel Falcao face Gerald harris by average weight. Check out the likely event card:
