New boyfriend of the former champion Ronda Rousey, Travis Browne won again on his return to the Octagon, but the triumph came in a very controversial fight, against Matt Mitrione, on the main card of UFC Fight Night 81, in the early hours of this Monday (18).
The first point of contention in the duel were the two fingers in the eye applied by the Glendale Fighting Team athlete, which, in addition to not resulting in punishment with a point removed, especially in a heated fight, also left Mitrione's eye completely disfigured.
Furthermore, the end of the fight was also marked by controversy, but this time due to the actions of the fight's central referee. After applying a takedown to Mitrione, Browne ended up fracturing his rival's collarbone, who fought for around a minute and a half with the injury, and it was even possible to see his bone loose at times in a shocking image.
The referee's lengthy interruption only came after a series of punches and elbows on the ground and pound. With the triumph, Travis Browne reached 18 wins, three losses and one draw.
Pettis returns apathetic and loses the second in a row
The defeat for the Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos seems to have really messed with the head of Anthony Pettis, former UFC lightweight champion. Back in the Octagon for the first time since losing the title to the Brazilian in March last year, he performed in an apathetic manner and was no match for former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez, who won in a split decision from the judges. .
The strategy used by Alvarez was very similar to Dos Anjos: pressure. The Philadelphia-born fighter gave Pettis no peace, much less space for Showtime to showcase his sharp striking and surprising strikes. Dominating the takedown game and abusing the clinch on the fence to exhaust his rival, Eddie minimized the risk from the always dangerous Pettis.
At the end of the duel, one of the judges still saw Anthony's victory in the fight, but two judges gave an advantage to Alvarez, who prevailed in a split decision and asked for a duel precisely against Rafael dos Anjos. “I already fought with the former champion and now I want to fight with the champion. Give him to me!” he said, still in the Octagon.
