Many fighters can't handle defeat very well after a long period of unbeaten streak. This does not appear to be the case Chris Weidman, who said he was happy to have lost the fight – and the UFC middleweight belt – to Luke Rockhold, in December of last year.

On that occasion, Weidman was defeated by technical knockout in the fourth round, putting an end to his unbeaten record in professional MMA. The North American said that happiness is not the result of the result itself, but rather the fact that, now, he will allow himself to evolve in a way he wouldn't have if he had won.

“I'm really happy I lost. I feel like if I had found a way to win, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to grow as a fighter. I would have been stuck with the same things, like 'if it ain't broke, it doesn't need fixing'. So, now that I lost, I can feel free, and if I feel the need to do something, I will do it without thinking twice,” said Weidman, in an interview with “The MMA Hour” podcast.

According to the former champion, the hardest moment of the entire process was telling his eldest son what had happened. “It was the hardest part of everything. My family is very involved in my life and my son knows what is going on. He knows daddy is a champion, he's proud of me, he knew I would fight Luke Rockhold. He wanted me to throw him to the ground, hit him and remain champion. He knows that daddy never loses. So having to tell him what happened was really tough. Just thinking about it makes me emotional. But it's been a month and he still loves me, he still sees me as his hero,” he added.
