In an epic duel, with 25 minutes of intense exchange of blows and a lot of heart from the athletes, Lawler managed to defend the welterweight title (up to 77 kg.) in a split decision from the judges (48×47, 47×48, 48× 47).
The fight
The fight between Robbie Lawler e Carlos Condit It was historic and has everything to be included in the list of greatest duels in the entire history of the UFC. With the athletes showing great dedication and trying to define the dispute with each punch, the duel would be a scene from a movie in nearby Hollywood.
Lawler, as champion, started taking the initiative and moving forward, but Condit was more dangerous in the counterattack. In one of these attacks, the challenger landed a counter blow and took the belt holder to the canvas in the first round. But Robbie got up, survived the punishment and continued in the contest.
After losing the first round, Lawler came back with everything in the second round. The champion showed why he owns the belt and showed his entire arsenal in the stand-up fight. In turn, Condit showed courage and accepted the frank exchange of blows. The big moment of the round came when Carlos tried to move forward with straight strikes and was surprised by a right cross. The punch knocked the challenger down. But, just as Robbie had done previously, Condit withstood the pressure and continued the fight.
As an irony of fate, the third round was the warmest of the entire fight, but, quite possibly, the one responsible for defining the winner. Condit hit Lawler more, however, he was the champion who faced more danger in his attacks.
In the fourth round, the excitement returned to the Octagon. Carlos Condit opened the game again, walked forward and hit with power Robbie Lawler. The champion showed a lot of resistance, but had difficulty responding to attacks.
The fifth and final round seemed to follow the same path as the fourth: Condit walking forward and throwing blows, while Lawler seemed to lack the strength to counterattack. However, once again, Robbie showed why he owns the belt. With just over two minutes remaining, the champion, against the bars, managed to hit Carlos in the face.
Lawler realized that his rival felt the blow and went for it. With an incredible combination of direct blows, crosses and kicks, he brought the crowd to his side, who screamed from the seats at the MGM Gran Garden. Condit, brave, withstood the pressure and in the final seconds he also tried to respond with a flying knee, but the blow went blank.
When the bell sounded, the exhausted athletes leaned against the railings and were greatly applauded by the fans. In the end, Lawler prevailed in a split decision (48×47, 47×48, 48×47) and defended the welterweight belt for the second time.
After the announcement, as a sign of respect for the great battle, Robbie Lawler Was until Carlos Condit and raised his arm showing that he had also won the dispute (watch the video below).
