Jean Silva explained the scare he suffered in the first round of Noche UFC . The Brazilian faced José Delgado in the main event, held last Saturday (12), and suffered a knockdown in the first round before recovering and winning by submission. Despite the dangerous moment, the Fighting Nerds representative revealed that he was aware of the risks he took during the fight.
In a video posted to his YouTube channel, Jean Silva acknowledged receiving criticism for the start of the fight, but stated that his aggressive stance and willingness to take risks are part of his style. The Brazilian emphasized that he believes he needs to expose himself at certain moments to achieve his goal of becoming UFC champion.
“Everyone’s cursing me, saying: ‘Wow, crazy first round, and all that.’ Man, it was really risky, but I’ll only be champion because I take risks,” said Jean Silva.
Jean Silva also explained that the knockdown he suffered against Delgado happened precisely in a situation that had been extensively practiced during training. The Brazilian admitted that he failed by not paying attention to the strike from the center and assessed that he made a mistake by feeling comfortable with a high guard. According to him, the strategy was to use his opponent's jab to create an escape angle and then respond with a counter-punch.

“We trained a lot to avoid knockdowns, precisely because it’s a punch to the middle, right? And it was stupid of me not to pay attention; until then I was more relaxed, I was like this (with my guard up). Because that way, the guy is afraid to throw a hard hand to the middle, because if I’m open and he throws a jab straight up, I have an angle to get out and counter-punch,” he explained.
Finally, the Fighting Nerds representative detailed the sequence that resulted in the knockdown. Jean explained that Delgado managed to connect with the jab, which was partially blocked, but ended up finding space to hit him again while the Brazilian moved his head. In the fighter's assessment, the straight punch only touched his face, while the cross thrown in sequence was the blow responsible for the knockdown.
"But there wasn't enough time, the jab landed, but I managed to block it and my head was coming this way (backwards). Then I took the straight punch, but it wasn't even the straight punch, it just grazed my head, but the cross that landed was the knockdown," concluded the Brazilian.
