In recent months, the climate of tension has intensified between neighboring countries Russia and Ukraine, even generating some conflicts in the border regions of the two nations. The disagreement between Russians and Ukrainians ended up being the motivation for the banishment of UFC heavyweight fighter Alexey Oleinik from his home country.

Now 38 years old, but a naturalized Russian since he began his career in MMA, Oleinik was considered a “threat to Ukrainian national security” and was banned from entering the country by local authorities. “In fact, the only thing I can say about this sentence is that it is absurd. Power in Ukraine was illegally invaded by criminals and now they are doing whatever they want. And even if I can or can't be there it doesn't matter, because I rarely visited the country. It would be better if they took care of the well-being of the citizens and brought it back to at least the level it was previously. Now they are worried about populist things, trying to make respectable people into evil characters”, said the fighter, in an interview with the “MK” website.

At 38 years old, Alexey Oleinik (or Oleksiy Oliynyk, as his Ukrainian name was) has a vast professional record of 50 wins, nine losses and one draw. The heavyweight signed with the UFC shortly after beating the legendary Mirko Cro Cop at the Legend Fight Show 2 event, held in November 2013. In the biggest organization on the planet, Oleinik beat Anthony Hamilton and Jared Rosholt. The Russian, however, has not fought since November 2014 and has been recovering from a series of knee problems.
