Umar Nurmagomedov was a heavy favorite to beat Song Yadong in the main event of UFC Shanghai , but he was surprised. At the event held last Saturday (29), Khabib Nurmagomedov 's cousin was brutally knocked out in the second round. Due to the adverse result, the Russian suffered a considerable drop in the bantamweight division (up to 61,2 kg) in the weekly update of the 'Meta UFC Rankings', released last Monday (31).

Before fighting at UFC Shanghai , Umar was ranked second in the division. However, with the tough defeat, the Russian plummeted in the rankings and lost three positions. Now, the athlete has fallen to fifth place and is definitively out of the chance to fight for the belt for the second time in his career.

On the other hand, Song, the home athlete, has plenty of reasons to celebrate. The Chinese fighter achieved the biggest victory of his career and has definitively entered the race to fight for the bantamweight title. With this important triumph, the fighter moved from sixth to third place.

In the co-main event, Denise Gomes surprised everyone by knocking out the favorite Yan Xiaonan in China. Riding a five-fight winning streak, the Brazilian has moved up a level in the strawweight division (up to 52,2 kg), gaining five positions. She has now jumped from ninth to fourth place and is considered a contender to challenge champion Mackenzie Dern.

In contrast, Xiaonan, with two consecutive losses, dropped out of the top 5 in the strawweight division and almost fell out of the top 10. Losing five positions in the rankings, the Chinese fighter became the number nine in the category.

Changes in flies

At UFC Shanghai , two fighters seized the opportunity and rose in the flyweight division (up to 56,7 kg). Su Mudaerji defeated Alex Perez by unanimous decision, and Rei Tsuruya submitted Kevin Borjas in the first round. Therefore, the former gained two positions in the division's ranking, becoming the 11th ranked fighter, while the latter, who was not previously ranked, has now moved up to 13th place.
