Carlos Prates is excited about the possibility of facing Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight title (up to 77 kg). After the Russian defeated Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 , the Brazilian became a potential next challenger for the title. In the smoker's view, the fight between the champion and the Irishman also served to show avenues that could be explored in a possible future duel.
In an interview with Gilbert Durinho , Carlos Prates stated that he became even more confident after analyzing Ian Machado Garry 's performance . The Brazilian identified similarities between some of the defenses presented by the Irishman and movements he usually uses in his own fights. The analysis made the smoker believe even more in his chances.

“Man, I got more confident. From the things I saw, from the things we have to train with, I was like: 'I think I can do it.' I already thought so, but I saw that Ian Garry defended some positions the way I defend them… That defense he made, I did in all my fights, against Ian himself I did it… Man, this guy ( Islam Makhachev ) is going to get screwed when I get him,” said Carlos Prates.
