Carlos Prates is not a big fan of Islam Makhachev 's fighting style . After defeating Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 , the Russian saw the Fighting Nerds smoker gain traction among fans as a contender for the welterweight title (up to 77 kg) in his next fight. But, if it were up to the Brazilian, any potential confrontation with the Dagestani fighter would have to be settled standing up.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Carlos Prates criticized Makhachev's fighting style and stated that he doesn't enjoy watching fights where grappling is predominant. Although he revealed that he currently prefers training grappling to striking, the Brazilian emphasized that he finds fights with a lot of ground action unattractive.

It’s crazy because now I actually enjoy training grappling more than striking, but I don’t like watching grappling or fighters going to the ground. It’s a boring fight. I don’t like it,” said Carlos Prates.
