Former rival surprises and reveals the only UFC fighter capable of beating Usman Nurmagomedov.

Paul Hughes spoke again about Usman Nurmagomedov and gave a strong assessment of the Russian's potential in MMA. According to the Irishman, the former lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg) has what it takes to compete at the highest level in the UFC, should he be signed.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, this Tuesday (18), Hughes also commented on possible opponents who could pose a challenge to Usman inside the octagon. The fighter highlighted that he knows the Russian's capabilities well after having fought him on two occasions.

“I think the only person in the UFC right now who has a chance against ( Usman Nurmagomedov ) is Topuria. I’ve fought 10 rounds with him. I know his capabilities and I know the style needed to beat him. The only people in the world who can beat him: me and Ilia… He beats Gaethje, for sure, no problem at all. He could definitely be the UFC champion right now,” said Paul Hughes.

The statement comes amid a period of uncertainty in Usman's career. The Russian is currently without a contract with the PFL after his time with the organization ended, and his future in MMA remains uncertain. This situation puts the fighter on the UFC's radar . Should the move happen, the undefeated fighter would arrive at the world's premier company already surrounded by expectations and with credentials to compete for top positions in the lightweight division.

At 28 years old, Usman is considered one of the top names outside of the UFC. Undefeated in his professional career, the fighter has 22 wins, nine by knockout and seven by submission. The Russian recently had a rivalry with Irishman Paul Hughes , defeating him on two occasions.
