Glover Teixeira analyzed Herb Dean's work after the controversy surrounding Alex Poatan 's loss to Ciryl Gane . According to the former light heavyweight champion (up to 93 kg), the referee's extensive schedule may be affecting his performance and contributing to errors during UFC fights.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, this Tuesday (18), Glover highlighted that Dean works in a very large number of fights and stated that the referee appears to be worn out. Despite recognizing his quality, the Brazilian cited recent mistakes to justify his assessment.

“Herb Dean is a great guy, nothing against him… I think he just needs some rest. On Friday he’s in one place, on Thursday in another, and he’s refereeing many, many fights. It seems like he’s exhausted. That’s how I see it, Herb Dean is one of the best, but he makes mistakes like with Michel Pereira ,” said Glover Teixeira.

Glover also cited Herb Dean's performance in Michel Pereira 's last UFC fight against Shara Magomedov . The episode generated repercussions and was considered by the former champion as an example of how the referee's extensive work schedule can influence his performance. The Russian grabbed the Brazilian's hair in the first round and in the third round poked him in the eye; in neither incident did the referee deduct points.

The controversial moment occurred after the Frenchman landed a jab that knocked the Brazilian down. With Poatan trying to defend himself on the ground, Gane advanced to deliver ground and pound strikes until the referee stopped the fight.

After the fight, videos and images of the sequence began circulating on social media, fueling questions about the legality of some elbow strikes delivered by the former interim heavyweight champion. Some fans pointed out that certain attacks may have hit the back of Alex Poatan 's head , a target protected by the Unified Rules of MMA adopted by the UFC and the main athletic commissions in the United States.
