Islam Makhachev finds weakness in Ian Garry ahead of UFC 330 fight: 'He loses'

Islam Makhachev believes that Ian Garry 's history plays in his favor at UFC 330. Scheduled to defend the welterweight belt (up to 77 kg) against the Irishman in the main event, scheduled for next Saturday (15), the Russian used his rival's only defeat to reinforce his confidence before the confrontation.

During a press conference at Media Day, Makhachev highlighted Garry's defeat to Shavkat Rakhmonov and stated that the result shows the Irishman's difficulty when facing high-level opponents. In the champion's view, the Kazakh dominated four of the five rounds of that fight.

“When he faces good opponents, he loses. That’s it. When he faced Shavkat (Rakhmonov), just look at his fight. Shavkat beat him in four rounds,” said Islam Makhachev.

The Russian also acknowledged Garry's value by recalling his rival's victory over Carlos Prates . However, Makhachev made a point of emphasizing that he considers himself a different fighter from the opponents the Irishman has faced.

"He may have beaten Carlos Prates . He may beat anyone. But I'm not like that, folks. I'm different," Makhachev concluded.

The Irishman attempts to shock the world with a record of 17 wins and only one loss.

The technical matchup pits Garry's striking volume against Makhachev's relentless wrestling. The challenger lands an average of 4,78 significant strikes per minute compared to the champion's 2,45, but will need to test his 80% takedown defense. This is because Makhachev executes approximately 3,10 takedowns every 15 minutes with 56% accuracy, overwhelmingly controlling the action on the ground.
