Jon Jones didn't mince words when analyzing a potential UFC fight between Ilia Topuria and Islam Makhachev . Despite the Spaniard competing in the lightweight division (up to 70,3 kg) and the Russian in the welterweight division (up to 77 kg), the former champion pointed to 'El Matador' as the favorite in the duel, highlighting his technical skills and finishing ability.

During an appearance on the ALF Global YouTube channel, Jones explained that he sees Topuria as having a superior overall performance, especially in terms of submissions, while acknowledging Makhachev's high level of wrestling.

“I would choose Tapuria. Because Tapuria has superior performance. I feel that Islam has the best wrestling. But I feel that Tapuria has more submission skills,” said Jon Jones.

Still, he considered that both are fully capable of winning, but stated that, if he had to bet, he would put his money on the Spanish fighter.

“Any of these guys can win any given night. But if I had to personally bet on this fight, I think I’d put my money on Ilia,” concluded the former champion.

Despite Jon Jones ' confidence in Ilia Topuria , the Spaniard is going through a delicate moment in his career. He is coming off a tough loss to Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC Casa Branca , held on June 14th, when he was forced to withdraw after suffering fractures to his nose and orbital bones. With the setback, in addition to the injuries, Topuria also lost his lightweight title and his undefeated record in professional MMA.

On the other hand, Islam Makhachev is going through the opposite phase. The Russian won the welterweight belt by dominating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 and already has a new fight scheduled. He will put his title on the line at UFC 330 , scheduled for August 15th, against Ian Garry.
