With the victory of the Brazilian football team yesterday afternoon, another team of Tupiniquin athletes did nothing less soon after in Canada. With five Brazilians in WEC-49, only Rafael Rebello and Raphael Assunção, who faced fellow Brazilian Diego Nunes, left the Octagon without winning. Among the victors, highlights include Renan Barão, who made his debut on the show and submitted Anthony Leone with an armbar, Wagnney Fabiano who went through Frank Gomez in a unanimous decision and Diego Nunes who beat compatriot Raphael Assunção in a split decision by the side referees, with all fights being held on the preliminary card.
Among the main duels, as always, the WEC featured highly contested fights, exciting comebacks and excitement from beginning to end. In the main attraction of the night, former champion Jamie Varner was superior to the Iranian Kamal Shalorus, who still lost a point for an illegal strike, however, to everyone's surprise, at the end of the three rounds the scorecards recorded a draw.
