MMA star Justin Gaethje is having a perfect season, but suffered his first defeat, and it happened outside the octagon. Last Wednesday (15), in New York (USA), the UFC lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg) was present at the traditional ESPY 2026 awards, popularly known as the ' American Sports Oscars', as he competed in the 'Fighter of the Year' category, but was surprised.
Gaethje was the only MMA fighter competing for the prestigious award, which was won by boxing star Terence Crawford. Besides the UFC champion, Claressa Shields and Gabriela Fundora also failed to win.
'The Highlight' earned his place in the fight after beating Paddy Pimblett in January and shocking the world with his thrashing of the feared Ilia Topuria in June. Thanks to these victories, the veteran won the interim lightweight title for the second time in his career and the undisputed championship belt.
