Paulo Borrachinha turned down the opportunity to face a former champion and get closer to a title shot in the UFC light heavyweight division (up to 93 kg). The Brazilian was approached to replace Khalil Rountree in the main event of UFC Abu Dhabi , scheduled for July 25th, where he would face the current champion Magomed Ankalaev . However, the fighter from Minas Gerais refused the offer, considering the conditions presented by the organization unsuitable.
In an interview with journalist Ariel Helwani, Borrachinha explained that he received the invitation with less than two weeks' notice, which would require a trip of approximately 16 hours to Abu Dhabi and preparation for a five-round fight.
“It’s less than 14 days to catch a flight to Abu Dhabi. It’s a 16-hour flight, five rounds, for the same money, and not even for an interim belt. I don’t think that makes sense right now,” said Borrachinha.
In a post on 'X', Borrachinha mocked the UFC's proposal, since, in addition to the fight conditions, the fighter from Minas Gerais would not receive any extra money and the duel would not be for the belt.
“Hey, I have a great offer for you: NON-TITLE FIGHT in 13 days, short notice, Abu Dhabi, 5 rounds, same money, nothing better. Me: I love you too,” wrote Paulo Borrachinha.
