Krylov started determined not to give Whittaker any space, who relied on counter-punches and movement. The Ukrainian took the fight to the clinch, which quickly turned into a takedown. While the Australian tried to get up, Krylov clinched again and managed to take his back.

Whittaker managed to break free, took a deep breath, and resumed the striking exchange. The former champion landed a quick jab-straight combination, forcing Krylov to retreat. The fighters traded blows standing up until, in the final second of the round, Whittaker landed a high kick without much impact.
