Cormier claims Jon Jones made it difficult to negotiate a trilogy deal outside the UFC for fear of losing; understand why.

Daniel Cormier last fought in 2020, but that didn't stop him from being competitive. Not surprisingly, after years, the former fighter and current commentator reignited his rivalry with Jon Jones . This is because a possible trilogy between the MMA legends was recently considered, but it didn't materialize. And, according to 'DC', the reason the showdown didn't happen was his eternal rival.

During a Q&A session with fans, Cormier stated that Jones made it difficult to negotiate a third fight because he was afraid of losing. It's worth noting that the rematch between the rivals would not take place in the UFC, but rather in grappling. Having made his mark in wrestling, 'DC', even at 47 years old, made it clear that he was more than willing to face 'Bones' again.

More than that, Cormier declared that this time he would finally defeat his rival, and convincingly. However, the veteran explained that Jones imposed a condition that made the trilogy impossible. Therefore, 'DC' made it clear that he gave up on seeking his first victory against his tormentor because Jones adopted an unyielding stance and because he perceived that he wasn't very interested in the fight.

“Regarding the offer with Jon Jones . I made a video and explained it. I swear to God, it wouldn't be in the RAF, because they can't afford it, but there's an organization that offered seven figures for a six-minute fight. He won't do it. I'm telling you, he won't agree. I'm not lying. I negotiated and said, 'If he wrestles me, I'll do it, but it'll be 10-0.' But unfortunately, he knows the score will be 10-0, so he won't accept,” said the MMA legend.

“Then I said, ‘How about we do a grappling match?’ He said, ‘No, only submission.’ I said, ‘Well, why don’t we do it with points, right? I don’t want to end in a draw.’ Then he said, ‘No points, only submission.’ So, he won’t do that. He won’t compete with me in anything he thinks he has a chance of losing. So, forget about this Jon Jones story . He won’t accept it,” he concluded.

What happened in the two fights between Jones and Cormier?

In their first fight, held in 2015 and which became a classic, Jon Jones defeated Daniel Cormier by unanimous decision (49-46 3x) and defended the UFC light heavyweight title (up to 93 kg) for the eighth time. In the highly anticipated rematch, which took place in 2017, 'Bones' knocked out 'DC'.

However, the fight was declared a no-contest after the bad boy tested positive for the banned substance 'turinabol'. Even so, Jones ignores the incident and claims to have won the fight.
