“In my view, he is a hypocrite. Raising the Israeli flag after the fighting—a state that, in front of billions of people, committed genocide against Gaza, against children and women, and right when the whole world was condemning it, he raised the Israeli flag. Then he went to Brazil to rescue dogs from a flood. By rescuing dogs, he's just chasing hype on Instagram and likes,” he stated.

At the time, the Brazilian publicly announced that he had received threats via social media because of his stance. He justified his decision by saying he had been impacted by videos of the Israel-Hamas war. Furthermore, the fighter also revealed that he had friends from that region.
“The flag is because of the war that is going on in Israel. I am very sad about what is happening. I have friends from Israel. I saw some videos that really affected me. I have a young child now, I put myself in the place of the Israeli. I saw a video of a child being woken up, hungry, without his father and mother (…) Today, with a young child, it even hurts my heart, because I put myself in their place. So I decided to honor Israel today,” he stated at the press conference after the victory against Petroski.
