After twice failing to win the UFC flyweight belt, John Dodson announced that he would return to the top division, the roosters. The North American, who has already beaten the current weight champion, TJ Dillashaw, he already has in mind the opponent who will mark his return to 61 kg: the Brazilian Thomas almeida.

Undefeated in professional MMA, Thominhas has been “making noise” in his weight class by overwhelmingly beating all his opponents so far. In his last fight, at the beginning of the month, he ran over Anthony Birchak with a beautiful knockout in São Paulo. It was precisely this fight that motivated Dodson to make the challenge.

“Brian Stann [the former fighter who did the commentary for the fight in the United States] said that no bantamweight would challenge Thomas almeida, and I said ‘What?’ So I asked my manager to suggest this fight. They said no one would challenge him, but I'm not afraid of anyone. I need a fight and he's not tagged with anyone. But so far they haven’t gotten back to me,” explained Dodson, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Fighting”.

Dodson, 31 years old, has a record of 24 wins and seven losses in professional MMA. In the UFC, he only lost twice, both times against the flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson.
