Shorter than his opponent, Bulldog sought to move around a lot and constantly feint in order to find openings in the Mexican's game. Initially, he succeeded by landing right straights as a counter-attack to Chairez's jabs, who was trying to impose himself physically by dominating the center of the octagon. Edgar then worked his jab and, after establishing the correct distance, knocked Bruno down with a straight punch that, even though it only grazed him, had enough power to unbalance the Brazilian.
From this point on, Bulldog began looking for takedown opportunities, but ended up on the ground once again after being hit by a powerful uppercut. Instead of going for the knockout, Chairez went for the mount, transitioned to the back, and finished the fight with a rear-naked choke at four minutes and 13 seconds of the first round.
